Large-scale structure with gravitational waves. II. Shear
نویسندگان
چکیده
The B (curl) mode of the correlation of galaxy ellipticities (shear) can be used to detect a stochastic gravitational wave background, such as that predicted by inflation. In this paper, we derive the tensor mode contributions to shear from both gravitational lensing and intrinsic alignments, using the gaugeinvariant, full-sky results of Schmidt and Jeong {arXiv:1204.3625 [Phys. Rev. D (to be published)]}. We find that the intrinsic alignment contribution, calculated using the linear alignment model, is larger than the lensing contribution by an order of magnitude or more, if the alignment strength for tensor modes is of the same order as for scalar modes. This contribution also extends to higher multipoles. These results make the prospects for probing tensor modes using galaxy surveys less pessimistic than previously thought, though still very challenging.

Lensing reconstruction of primordial cosmic microwave background polarization
We discuss the possibility to directly reconstruct the cosmic microwave background ~CMB! polarization field at the last scattering surface by accounting for modifications imposed by the gravitational lensing effect. The suggested method requires a tracer field of the large scale structure lensing potentials that deflected propagating CMB photons from the last scattering surface. This required i...
متن کاملLimits on a stochastic background of gravitational waves from gravitational lensing.
We compute the effects of a stochastic background of gravitational waves on multiply imaged systems or on weak lensing. There are two possible observable effects, a static relative deflection of images or shear, and an induced time-dependent shift or proper motion. We evaluate the rms magnitude of these effects for a COBE normalized, scale-invariant spectrum, which is an upper limit on spectra ...
متن کاملPrimordial Gravitational Waves and Inflation: CMB and Direct Detection With Space-Based Laser Interferometers
The curl-modes of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization probe horizon-scale primordial gravitational waves related to inflation. A significant source of confusion is expected from a lensing conversion of polarization related to density perturbations to the curl mode, during the propagation of photons through the large scale structure. Either high resolution CMB anisotropy observations ...
متن کاملA New Shear Estimator for Weak Lensing Observations
We present a new shear estimator for weak lensing observations which properly accounts for the effects of a realistic point spread function (PSF). Images of faint galaxies are subject to gravitational shearing followed by smearing with the instrumental and/or atmospheric PSF. We construct a ‘finite resolution shear operator’ which when applied to an observed image has the same effect as a gravi...
متن کاملLarge-scale structure with gravitational waves. I. Galaxy clustering
Observed angular positions and redshifts of large-scale structure tracers such as galaxies are affected by gravitational waves through volume distortion and magnification effects. Thus, a gravitational wave background can in principle be probed through clustering statistics of large-scale structures. We calculate the observed angular clustering of galaxies in the presence of a gravitational wav...
